This Day That Age
The exchange of fire between the armed forces of India and Pakistan in the Eastern Zone, which has been continuing for some weeks, has come to an end. An official announcement said in Karachi that the cease-fire came into effect at 12 noon on August 26. It was stated that this decision follows the Karachi-New Delhi correspondence which resulted in an agreement over the issue. This ceasefire was designed to create a congenial atmosphere for the foreign secretaries’ conference scheduled to begin in Karachi on August 30. The Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr. Feroze Khan Noon, told a press conference in Lahore that a cease-fire had been ordered both by India and Pakistan on the Assam-East Pakistan border where clashes had been going on. He added that he had received a cable from Mr. Nehru stating that India had decided to order cease fire.
