Letters to the Editor
PML(N) leader Nawaz Sharif’s decision to sit in the Opposition within a week of Pervez Musharraf’s resignation as Pakistan President has escalated another phase of political instability in the country. He cannot be blamed for pulling out of the ruling coalition because the PPP-led government failed to fulfil his demand to reinstate the judges sacked by President Musharraf. The situation has provided a golden opportunity to the PML(Q). The other beneficiaries of the latest development will be the Army-backed ISI and the jihadi groups which are set to fish in troubled waters. And the loser is democracy. Manoj Parashar, Noida It is unfortunate that Mr. Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari could not set aside their differences to consolidate the fledgling democracy in Pakistan, which was the ostensible purpose of the PML(N) and the PPP taking on the retired General Musharraf together. The canny general must be having a hearty laugh. For politicians, of India or Pakistan, partisan interests are more important than the national interest. With this avoidable split in the ruling coalition, Pakistan is heading back to square one. Tarsem Singh, New Delhi It is no surprise that the PPP and the PML(N) headed for a confrontationist course once their common objective of unseating Gen. Musharraf was achieved. For India, it will be business as usual dealing with an unstable Pakistan. G. Jagannathan, Dharmapuri
