“I don’t support bandhs; gheraos are immoral”

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Tuesday that he did not support bandhs. Neither was he in favour of “gherao,” which he felt was illegal and immoral. “Gherao will never return to the State,” he said

“Bandhs do not help the country,” he said at an interactive session with the industry, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry. “But since I belong to one party I have to keep mum if they call a strike,” he said in his usual candid style. But he had decided that the next time, he would “open his mouth.”

Mr. Bhattacharjee said trade unions need to behave and the State government was trying its best to change the mindset of their leaders and workers.

The State government was trying to come up with a law to give more right to the workers, while setting production norms for them. “The government must have a balanced policy – we must protect the interest of the worker as well as the small entrepreneurs,” he said.
