MACHILIPATNAM: Krishna district received 21,062 tonnes of fertilizers in August as against the total requirement of 38,000 tonnes, said district Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference, she said that the remaining stock was expected to reach by the end of the month. As many as 20,314 tonnes of fertilizers had already been distributed to the farmers through 324 primary agricultural cooperative societies. Some quantity had been distributed through agro service centres too. Reasons for delayAsserting that there was no scarcity of fertilizers in the district, the Collector explained that the problem arose mainly because of the problems in import of certain chemicals by the Union Government from various countries. This could have affected production of fertilizers. As all districts were in need of the stock, which was being procured from the Centre, there could be problems in transportation, she reasoned. Ms. Ramaiyer felt that the problem could have arisen also due to the eagerness of farmers to use more of complex fertilizers for higher yield. Even then, to meet the rising demand, the district administration had placed an indent for additional 7,200 tonnes of fertilizers. She said farmers were being counselled on the perils of using more of complex fertilisers, which would affect the productivity of the soil. Farmers were being encouraged to switch over to organic fertilizers.
