NEW DELHI: To honour wrestler Sushil Kumar who won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and is also a former student of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi-run primary school, the civic body has decided to name a major road in its area after him. Acting Mayor and Sports Promotion Committee chairman Divya Jaiswal said on Tuesday: “By winning the bronze medal, Sushil Kumar has become a matter of pride and emulation for students of municipal primary schools. He was a student of the MCD primary school at Baprola in Najafgarh zone. To inspire the next generation to take lessons from him, a major road of the MCD would be named as Wrestler Sushil Kumar Road.” “Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, bronze medallist Vijender Kumar and Sushil Kumar would be introduced to the students studying in municipal primary schools and a public function would be organised by the MCD to accord a civic reception to them. Students of municipal primary schools would be specially invited to the function,” he added. Mr. Jaiswal announced that the Sports Promotion Committee in coordination with the Education Committee would make a concerted effort to create awareness about sports among students. “The MCD is also considering a proposal to construct a sports stadium in the rural area. It would comprise a boxing ring, akhara, cycle track and a football ground. The entire project is expected to cost about Rs.5 crore and would be completed within two years. The MCD would handover the stadium to some sports federation for its running and upkeep,” he added.
