NEW DELHI: The dates for the next session of Parliament were finalised on Tuesday after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. It was officially stated that Parliament would meet on October 17 and would be in session for about five weeks till November 21. Parliament was not prorogued after the two-day session of the Lok Sabha on July 21 and 22 when the motion of confidence was voted upon and adopted. If it does not get prorogued, the next session would be seen as a continuation of the two-day session. A number of Assembly elections are due to be held in November-December, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. Elections in Jammu and Kashmir are due in October-November. The session dates’ announcement was possibly made keeping in mind the likely election timetable that will be announced by the Election Commission later. The last dates by which the new Assemblies have to be convened are as follows: Jammu and Kashmir November 20, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram December 14, Delhi December 17, Chhattisgarh December 21 and Rajasthan January 14, 2009. The parliamentary committee looking into the alleged misconduct by Babubhai Katara, Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gujarat in a human trafficking case met here on Wednesday and is expected to finalise its report at its next sitting on September 8. Some members of the committee indicated that a “tough decision” would be taken against Mr. Katara, who for one reason or another has failed to appear before the panel. The next sitting of the committee that is ascertaining the facts in the cash-for-vote scandal is scheduled for Thursday.
