TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s (TNCA) decision to provide subsidy to the district associations for laying turf wickets has come as a boon for the talented young cricketers spread over the State. The experience of playing on the turf will stand them in good stead while competing for participation at higher levels. The TNCA has come forward to provide 75 per cent subsidy for laying centre wicket and practice wicket. The Tiruchi District Cricket Association (TDCA), utilising the opportunity, has laid the turf wicket at Saranathan Engineering College here. It was inaugurated by TNCA Secretary K.S. Viswanathan on Tuesday. “We believe that this move should bridge the gap between the city and district players. The boys from the district have abundant talent, but what they lack is the exposure to turf wickets. Since most of the matches these days are played on turf wickets they find it hard to adapt. The new facility created in Tiruchi should be of great help to them,” Mr. Viswanathan said, adding that many other district associations have also evinced interest in laying turf wickets. The TDCA secretary K. G. Muralidharan said Saranathan Engineering College was chosen as the venue for laying the turf wicket, as it had an exclusive cricket ground. “The turf wicket should be maintained well and TDCA has made extensive arrangements for it,” he added. Former Tamil Nadu cricketer S. Sharath played a few lovely drives on the turf much to the delight of the young cricketers present at the ground. TDCA president M. Kalidas, College Director V. Nagarajan, Secretary S. Ravindran and Principal Y. Venkataramani were present on the occasion.
