2,000 litres seized from Ambalappuzha

Spirit, wash seized from different parts of

the district in 24 hours

Cases have been registered and investigations are on, say police

ALAPPUZHA: The Ambalappuzha police seized around 2,000 litres of illicit spirit from a lorry here on Wednesday morning.

A patrolling party of the Ambalappuzha police found the lorry, bearing registration number TN-28 H-1172, abandoned on the roadside near Thottapally around 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday night. The team seized the vehicle and shifted it to the police station, where an early morning inspection aroused doubts of a concealed panel in the lorry’s rear compartment. Further examination led to the discovery of the spirit.

The Ambalappuzha episode was the fifth instance of illicit liquor or spirit being seized by the police and Excise officials in the district in the past 24 hours. While 1,225 litres of spirit was seized from a house in Mannar late on Tuesday night, 2,000 litres of wash was seized from another house in Vellamkadavu, also near Mannar. Another 210 litres of spirit was seized from a Maruti car during a routine vehicle check at Mulakuzha near Chengannur at 11 p.m. on Tuesday night while another 700 litres was seized from a vehicle, which was moving under suspicious circumstances, from Charumoodu. Cases have been registered and investigations are on in all five cases. Sources in police said that with the Onam festival nearing, it was natural that bootleggers would be active. At the same time, a few police officials said the reported disbanding of the Inter-State Illicit Spirit Movement Investigation team, led by Inspector General of Police Rishi Raj Singh, had led to the notorious Central Travancore spirit lobby becoming active once again.
