Kakinada: Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi suggested to Joint Director of Agriculture T Nandaiah to take up cultivation of jute in about 100 acres in upland areas of the district on an experimental basis next year to see to what extent farmers can benefit from it. He said though jute production in East Godavari district was nil, it need not be dismissed as waste because it was a proven means to generate good profits for farmers interested in diversifying into non-paddy crops. Addressing a Jute Awareness Camp organized here on Wednesday by Andhra Pradesh Jute Development Centre Limited (APJDC), Mr. Dwivedi said jute was evidently reaping rich dividends for the farmers in West Bengal and some other States and Bangladesh was in the forefront of realising the potential of jute. Awareness
Therefore, awareness was needed to be created about it not only in East Godavari but also throughout the State to make a small beginning and gradually expand its reach to the benefit of all stakeholders. APJDC managing director B.V. Rama Rao said similar camps were already organised in the north coastal districts and he was making efforts to set up a jute park with a proposed investment of Rs 100 crores in Visakhapatnam district. Jute cultivation could be taken up in East Godavari district for which certain facilities and encouragement were required. NABARD Assistant General Manager Satyanarayana and others were present. Nod for flyoverThe proposal to construct flyover at Chitrada railway gate on NH 214 near Pithapuram was cleared by the Centre, said local MP M. M. Pallam Raju. In a press release here, he said that Rs. 17.63 crores was sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways for the purpose. Paper mill’s gestureThe Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills Limited has donated Rs. 1 lakh to ‘Protsaham’ scheme, which is aimed at providing quality higher education to poor students. Its general manager G. Kanna Rao, deputy general manager N.V.V. Satyanarayana and director P.K. Suri presented a cheque for the amount to Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi at the Bennet Club.
