Centre flayed for not consulting scientists over nuclear deal

Staff Reporter

“According to scientists, power can be produced in the country using raw material available here”

PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday criticised the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for going ahead with the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal without consulting nuclear scientists in the country .

At a talk here, CPI (M) Polit Bureau member K. Varadharajan said that according to Indian nuclear scientists, power could be very well produced in the country using the raw material available over here.

The Common Minimum Programme had mentioned that India would have strategic relations with the U.S. but the Congress agreed to remove it after the CPI (M) had raised opposition, Mr. Varadharajan said, adding that the Congress later backtracked on its agreement.

Warships, planes

Associate Editor of Frontline R. Vijayshankar said the nuclear deal allows warships of the United States to come to India and also planes to refuel during wars.

“The country has to fight against imperialism again. Puducherry has a history of fighting imperialism. It gave refuge to Subramanya Bharati. The people of Puducherry should be in the front against this fight against imperialism,” he said.

State committee member of the party T. Murugan also spoke.
