SP told to pursue missing children cases

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday directed the Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, to sincerely pursue the investigation into 28 cases of missing children pending in various stations under his jurisdiction.

Passing interim orders on a habeas corpus petition, a Division Bench of Justices D. Murugesan and M. Sathyanarayanan said it was imperative to take effective steps in view of the large number of such cases.

The petition was filed by the mother of a 12-year-old boy, alleging that her son was in the illegal custody of a gang involved in child trafficking at Gandhi Nagar under the Thiruverumbur taluk in Tiruchi district.

Special team

Expressing concern over the spurt in the cases of child trafficking, the Bench directed the Superintendent of Police on August 13 to form a special team to go into the issue and file a report in the Bench.

In his report filed on Wednesday, the Superintendent said a team, comprising a Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Inspectors, four Sub-Inspectors and 16 constables, had been formed to nab child traffickers.

A meeting was convened on August 18 and the team members were instructed to mount a close watch on the perpetrators.

The team rescued two children on August 22 and 23 and sent them to a care home.
