Moment to cherish: Union Minister D. Purandareswari giving away Prathibha Puraskaram to a girl at a function held in Guntur on Wednesday. —

GUNTUR: Holding aloft the gold medal and a citation given by the Ramineni Foundation, Yandrapraggada Nagavinodini is on cloud nine. She has not only topped the ZP High Schools in the district but also secured admission into IIIT at Nuzivid. Her father Venkateswarulu is a farmer from Medikonduru. The girl, by the dint of her performance, has made a statement that the academic performance of girls far outweighs that of the boys.

Guru Puraskarams

She was one of the 32 girls, out of 68 students who were presented the meritorious scholarship by the foundation at a function held here on Wednesday. Eight headmasters received the Guru Puraskarams. Receiving the award from Union Minister of State for Human Resources D. Purandareswari was an unforgettable moment for them.

In the IIIT selections, 434 students from the district, a majority of them girls, secured admissions. District Educational Officer Y. Chandramohan said: “When compared to boys, girls in the villages are not disturbed with daily chores like fetching vegetables, bringing groceries etc. Parents who have realised the value of education and the economic stability jobs bring to their families are now actively supporting the education of their children.”

The Education Department had motivated Class 10 students by distributing study material and held special classes after school hours.

‘An inspiration’

In her address, the Union Minister lauded the efforts of the foundation in supporting the meritorious students and said that it would go a long way in inspiring the students.

Zilla Praja Parishad Chairperson Kuchipudi Vijaya sought the foundation’s help in extending financial assistance to students who joined Intermediate in corporate colleges.

District Collector B. Venkatesham asked every student to think big and realise their dreams through hard work. Sons of Ramineni Ayyanna Chowdary, in whose memory the awards were instituted, graced the occasion.
