dated August 28, 1958: Far-East situation

Chinese batteries on August 27 pounded the Nationalist held island in the Formosa Strait with more than 8,000 shells as they bombarded them for the fifth successive day. The Nationalists claimed to have scored hits with return fire. American and Japanese defence chiefs conferred in Tokyo and United States military commanders briefed Japanese leaders on the Formosa Strait situation.
