PUDUCHERRY: With plans to modernise Pondicherry University on the anvil, Vice-Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen said on Wednesday Ananda Rangapillai library of the institution would be revamped with increased subscriptions, electronic journals and more computers for browsing facilities. Inaugurating the two-day book exhibition, he said there were plans to expand the browsing facilities and 100 more computers would be added for the students. Electronic and online journals would be available at the library, he added. “Several steps are being taken to modernise the university. In two to three years, the institution will become a world-class university. We are working towards this and the infrastructure is also growing with Rs. 150 crore worth buildings to come up. We are also improving the sports facilities,” Mr. Tareen said. The exhibition was being conducted for the second time since April 2007, he said, adding that it was an opportunity for teachers, students, scholars and management of affiliated colleges to have direct access to the new things in the world of publication under one roof. “Knowledge has no bounds. It is the focus now as we are emerging as a knowledge-based society. This is the time when libraries, print and electronic media play a vital role. Publishers have a big role to play too,” the Vice-Chancellor said. Highlighting the importance of updating knowledge, he said every library should get updated. “All 74 affiliated colleges of Pondicherry University should update themselves and get the recent publications,” he said.
