CM urged to invite Ratan Tata for Nano car project

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Chief Minister to invite the Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata to establish his small car production unit in the State.

Southern districts in Tamil Nadu possessed the basic requirements for industrial growth such as land and water resources, sufficient highways, rail network, and power, chamber president, S. Rethinavelu, said in a statement issued here.

He noted that the construction of a new integrated terminal building, which was a prelude to the upgrading of Madurai airport as an international one, would be completed by March 2009.

Extension of the runway to 12,500 feet would facilitate the landing of Jumbo jets, which could carry automobiles.

While Tamil Nadu was one of the industrially vibrant States in the country, industrial development was not uniform and southern districts had lagged behind. Establishment of the car manufacturing unit would promote a number of ancillary units in the south, which would accelerate industrial growth in the region.
