NIT-T to confer degrees on 998 candidates this year

With many an achievement to their credit

TIRUCHI: A total of 998 candidates are to receive their degrees at the fourth convocation of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T), on Friday.

The degrees covering a range of science and engineering disciplines will be conferred on the candidates, including 24 Ph.D. students, by L. Ganesh, Chairman, Rane Group, in the presence of R. Seshasayee, Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT-T. Five hundred graduates will receive their degrees in person, the Director of NIT-T, M. Chidambaram told reporters on Wednesday.

Gold medal

With a highest CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 9.72 out of 10 among all the B.Tech programmes, M. Lavanya of Chemical Engineering department, who has joined the University of Texas A & M for higher studies, will receive the Institute Gold Medal. Nine B. Tech, one B. Arch and 24 Post Graduate students who have obtained highest CGPA in their respective branches will also be honoured with the Institute’s Gold Medals.

More than 99 per cent of the B. Tech / B. Arch graduates are placed in reputed companies, while a few have sought admissions in IIMs, IITs and universities abroad for pursuing higher studies. Ten students – seven in Nehman Brothers and three in Amazon.com – have been offered the highest annual salary of Rs. 12 lakh each. Likewise, 92 per cent of PG graduates have been placed in reputed firms, Dr. Chidambaram said.

The most notable achievements this year are the cent per cent score in the Common Entrance Test (CAT) by Rahul Jain of Instrumentation and Control Engineering department; Best M. Tech Thesis award presented by the Indian Society for Technical Education for 2007 to Kalaivani of Civil Engineering Department; first prize for Robotics won by Prashant Agarwal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at IIT Bombay, Anna University and NIT – Calicut; and the first prize cash award of US $ 1500 won by Dhirendra Kumar Tripathi, Prasad Reddy and Rashmi of ECE Department in the NIOS Embedded Processor Design Contest – 2007.

Having been awarded 29 projects amounting to Rs. 5.30 crore during 2007-08, the Institute, said Dr. Chidambaram, was witnessing exponential growth in Consultancy and Research Activities.
