11 days of festivities for book lovers

The book fair will feature over 300 international and national publishers with over 10 lakh books on display.


KOZHIKODE: An international book fair and cultural festival would be organised in the city from August 29 to September 9 as part of the 34th annual celebrations of DC Books.

The book fair would feature over 300 international and national publishers with over 10 lakh books on a variety of topics to choose from.

Education Minister M.A. Baby will formally inaugurate the fair at a function at the Corporation Stadium at 4 p.m. on August 29. Sudhir Kakar, writer, would deliver the 10th D.C. Kizhakkemuri Commemorative Oration on the topic ‘Spirituality in the modern world,’ Ravi Deecee, CEO, DC Books, told reporters here on Thursday. T. Padmanabhan, writer, will inaugurate the cultural fest on the occasion. M. Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, will be the chief guest. M.M. Basheer, literary critic, and N. Gopalakrishnan, author, were also present at the press conference.

The books at the fair will include those in the short story, novel, poetry and autobiography genre and those on spirituality, philosophy, medical science, engineering and self-help. A separate section for children’s books has also been arranged.

Shobha De will be the guest on the second day of the fair, named ‘Basheer Day.’ M.M. Basheer, literary critic, will deliver the Basheer Memorial Lecture. A ghazal performance by Shahabaz Aman will be the highlight of the day.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will be the guest on the third day, named ‘K.T. Muhammed Day.’ Mamukoya, film actor, will deliver the K.T. Muhammed Memorial Lecture.

Prakash Karat, CPI (M) general secretary, who will be speaking on the topic ‘The Indo-U.S. Nuclear Deal: After Effects,’ is the guest on the fourth day titled ‘Baburaj Day.’ Ravi Menon, journalist will deliver the Baburaj Memorial Lecture.

Sukumar Azhikode, social critic, will be the guest on ‘Thikkodiyan Day,’ the fifth day of the fair.

A discussion on ‘Akyanavum Rashtriyavum’ would be held on sixth day, named ‘Uroob Day.’ T. Padmanabhan, writer, will be the chief guest of the day and C.V. Balakrishnan, writer, will deliver the Uroob Memorial Lecture.

T.J.S. George, journalist, will be the guest of the day on sixth day named ‘N.P.Muhammed Day.’ M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, will deliver the N.P. Muhammed Memorial Lecture on the occasion.

Indira Parthasarathy, writer, will be the guest of the seventh day titled ‘S.K.Pottekkad Day.’ M. Mukundan, president, Kerala Sahitya Akademi, will deliver the S.K. Pottekkad Memorial Lecture.

P.P. Ramachandran, poet, will deliver the N.N. Kakkad Memorial Lecture on the eighth day on September 6 titled ‘Kakkad Day.’ A discussion on ‘Puthu Kavithayum Puthu Jeevithavum’ will be held on the day.

A.K. Lohithadas, filmmaker, will deliver the Padmarajan Memorial Lecture on September 7 titled ‘Padmarajan Day.’ Balachandran Chullikkad, poet, will be the guest on the 11th day titled ‘John Abraham Day.’

The valedictory function will be held on September 9.

There will be literary contests for school students on all days of the fair.
