VISAKHAPATNAM: A two-day national workshop on “Sustainable Development: Rethinking Environmental Initiatives” is being organised by the St. Joseph’s College for Women on its campus on September 1 and 2. Addressing a media conference in this connection on Thursday, workshop coordinator P. Aruna Devi and Head of the Hindi Department P.K. Jayalakshmi said the objective of the workshop, being organised as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the college, was to awaken and rekindle the responsibility of educators towards environment. The environment was being increasingly threatened by commercial human activities, population explosion, increased urbanisation and depletion of natural resources. The biggest challenge for environmental educators today was to educate people to take a stand on conservation of resources and to hand over a clean environment to posterity. The workshop would focus on issues of concern, global and national environmental trends and suggest measures for balanced development. They said 150 delegates from across the country, including research scholars and environmental scientists, would participate in the workshop. The deliberations of the workshop would be sent to the Government. Saplings would be distributed to the participants after the workshop to create awareness on the need for afforestation. A competition was conducted as part of the workshop in which 12 working models and 18 posters were received on the theme, which would be put on display during the two days.
