They had planned agitation from August 29 Authorities promise to reinstate 60 sanitary workers BERHAMPUR: Members of the MKCG medical college unit of the Orissa Medical Workers’ Union (OMWU) called off its proposed cease-work agitation following assurances regarding their demands from the State Health Department. They had threatened to start cease-work agitation from Aug 29. Around 350 class IV employees of the medical college and its hospital were to take part in it exempting the emergency services from their agitation. These workers had been on dharna in front of the medical college campus since Aug 22 for their long-standing demands. On Thursday they also locked up the offices of the principal and superintendent of the medical college for some time. Secretary of the union Sukanta Mukhi said they called off their proposed cease-work after discussion of their representatives with the authorities. The health department had promised to reinstate 60 sanitary workers who had been removed from their jobs by the MKCG medical college authorities in the past, they said. The other demands of the union include discontinuation of privatization of sanitary work of the medical college hospital as according to the union it would affect the livelihood of sanitary workers employed in the medical college till now. The union has demanded filling of all vacancies of sanitary workers in the medical college and its hospital. At present there are 67 posts of class IV employees vacant in them. They also wanted all retrenched class IV employees to be reinstated soon. According to them vacant posts of supervisors, operation theatre attendants and X-ray attendants should be filled soon. The union wanted representation of grade IV employees of the medical college in the hospital management. They wanted their representatives in all committees formed for developmental works on the medical college campus. Their other demands included hike in allowances of grade IV employees and free medical facility to their family members. Administrative officer of the medical college Ranjan Sharma assured the agitating employees that steps would be taken to fulfil their other demands within next few months.
