Jajpur and Kendrapara have 13 colleges each Teaching staff given the responsibility in some colleges BHUBANESWAR: More than half of the colleges getting Government aid are functioning without regular principals in the State. Replying to query in the State Assembly here on Thursday, Higher Education Minister Sameer Dey said of the 254 aided colleges, principal’s posts were lying vacant in 135 colleges in the State. Of the 135 vacant posts, about 66 were in colleges in Cuttack, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Khurda and Bhadrak and managements of these colleges appeared to be making hardly any effort to fill them up . Interestingly Ekamra College, Maharshi College of Natural Law and Kamala Nehru Women’s College, all of which are located in the capital, have been running without principals for some years now. While controversy in the management of Maharshi College of Natural Law was said to be the reason behind the non-appointment of a principal, in the other two colleges the exact cause of delay was not yet known. Jajpur and Kendrapara each have 13 colleges without regular principals . Higher Education Minister said that the teaching staff was being given the principal’s duty on the basis of seniority. Sources said this led to a shortfall in the number of teachers . Moreover, due to the temporary nature of the responsibility, subordinates did not take the job seriously , they said.
