ACQUIRING SKILL: Food Minister E.V.Velu handing over a certificate to a woman, who had completed training in computer applications under the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana, at a function held in Chengam on Thursday.

CHENGAM: As a step towards enhancing job opportunities, the land for constructing a milk powder processing unit at Ammapalayam in Tiruvannamalai district had been identified and registered, Food Minister E.V.Velu has said.

He was participating in a function to hand over certificates to 927 students, who were trained in computer-related applications under the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana at the Chengam Block Development Office on Thursday.

Mr. Velu said that though the foundation stone for the unit had been laid by Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin last year, there had been a delay in further progress. One of the reasons was land acquisition. The State government had sanctioned funds for acquiring the land. But, the farmers from whom the land was procured, demanded a higher price. However, the issue had been sorted out and the land had been registered.

Mr. Velu said that contractors were not willing to take up the work as the cost of building materials had increased. As a result, the estimated cost had to be revised and a tender floated. Construction work would begin soon.

To a demand seeking a bypass road connecting Keezhpanathur, Tiruvannamalai and Chengam, Mr.Velu said the government was expecting funds from the World Bank or the NABARD. The proposal had already been sent to the Union government for approval.

The demand for a bypass road would be fulfilled soon. A BSNL tower had also been commissioned at Jamunamarathur on Jawadu Hills since August 27. The BSNL subscribers at Jamunamarathur would not encounter any signal problem, Mr. Velu said.

The ‘Annaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam’ had come as a boon to all village and town panchayats. In 2006-2007, 166 town and village panchayats were covered under the scheme. In 2007-2008, 170 village and town panchayats were covered. A total of 523 village and town panchayats would be covered from 2008 to 2011. Mr. Velu said the State government had given its nod for linking the Cheyyar with the Thenpennaiyar. The linking of the two rivers had been announced during the recently concluded budget session. Funds had been allotted and the work was in progress.

Later, the Minister handed over marriage assistance to 27 beneficiaries. Certificates were given to the students who had completed training in computer related applications.

Free gas connection was given to 1,127 beneficiaries. M. Rajendran, Tiruvannamalai Collector, T.Venugopal, Tirupattur MP, Polur Varadan, Chengam MLA, M.P.Giri, District Chairman, and G. Kumar, Chairman, Chengam Panchayat Union, also spoke.
