More than 95 per cent of the faculty, coming from India and abroad, have Ph.Ds The lecture theatre complex houses 6 lecture theatres of 400 seats and 200 seats capacity HYDERABAD: The city’s educational map, already dotted with prestigious institutions, will boast of yet another world-class institution, with the highly respected Birla Institute of Technological Sciences (BITS) starting its academic operations on Friday. The third campus of BITS in the country, located in Jawaharnagar on the outskirts of Hyderabad, will open its academic gates to 530 students in 13 disciplines in both bachelor and post graduate courses with an orientation programme on Friday while the actual class work will begin from Saturday. “It’s a dream that has been fulfilled with the cooperation of the State government much to the delight of students and parents,” said V.S. Rao, Director of BITS Hyderabad. State’s shareDr. Rao said 530 students have been admitted this year of which 120 are girl students. Students from the State, who have been literally dominating the admissions in BITS Pilani all these years, have grabbed a major share in the Hyderabad campus also. About 350 students are enrolled from the State of which about 215 hail from Hyderabad city. Faculty
They have been admitted in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, B. Pharmacy, M.Sc Tech (Information Systems) and M.Sc (Hons) in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics and Physics. Quality educationAssuring quality education on par with any other BITS institution, Prof. Rao said, the Hyderabad centre has the advantage of excellent facilities and latest equipment. More than 95 per cent of the faculty, coming from India and abroad, have Ph.Ds. They would be supported with a lecture theatre complex housing six lecture theatres of 400 seats and 200 seats capacity, computer labs, science labs, engineering workshop and a huge mess that can accommodate 1,000 students. Hostel accommodationProf. Rao said best of facilities have been provided in the two hostels – Krishna Bhavan and Ram Bhavan that have 630 rooms. The Meera Bhavan, carved out of Krishna Bhavan, will accommodate girl students in 133 rooms separated in all respects. While the hostels are provided with solar hot water systems, every room will be connected with Internet facility within a few days. In fact, students have already occupied their hostels. Dr. Rao said five lakh sft area has been built so far while 1.7 lakh sft area will be built in three phases. Krishna Kumar Birla, Chancellor of BITS, will formally inaugurate the campus at a later stage.
