Medical education programme on lung diseases

MADURAI: A one-day continuing medical education (CME) programme on pulmonary diseases will be conducted by Apollo Hospital and Cipla here on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday M. Palaniappan, pulmonologist, Apollo Hospital, said that pulmonary diseases had become a common phenomenon in many countries with lung cancer spreading across South Asia.
Stating that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease in which the lungs were damaged making it hard to breathe, was spreading rapidly than ever before.
Cigarette smoking was the most common cause of COPD. Most people with COPD were smokers or former smokers. Workers who smoked and were exposed to workplace dust were most likely to develop COPD, he said.
Experts in pulmonology from the southern states are expected to participate in the programme which will look at topics on newer investigations, latest drugs available, etc.
Madurai Kamaraj University Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel will inaugurate the programme.
