dated August 29, 1958: Peking Radio warning

The British Broadcasting Corporation said in a news bulletin on August 28 that according to Peking Radio the landing of Chinese troops on the Kuomintang-held island of Quemoy was “imminent". The bulletin said: “Peking Radio – in a broadcast beamed to Formosa two hours ago – said the K.M.T. forces on the island of Quemoy had been advised from the mainland to surrender. They had been warned that landings were imminent, and told that escape-routes were blocked by Chinese Naval forces.”
