DISCOVERY: One of the stone inscriptions found in Chikmagalur district.
Chikmagalur: Two stone inscriptions have been discovered by H.M. Nagaraja Rao, epigraphist, Mysore, and Hareesh Singatagere, advocate, Chikmagalur, at Halasinamaradalli, Kadur taluk.
One of the inscriptions, which was discovered in an agricultural plot near the bank of the Madagadakere Tank, belongs to the reign of the Hoysala King Narasimha I (1143 AD to 1173 AD).
It records the construction of the Sathaleshwara Temple by Vijayanna in memory of his father of Sathabhova, who was an officer in the palace of the Hoysala King. The characters are 12th Century Kannada.
It also records the grant of land to the temple and mentions the grant of an agrahara “Hattanagere-Nanooru” made by the Hoysala King Bittideva.
The other inscription was discovered on the pedestal of a recently found idol of Jain Tirthankara. Though it has worn out in several places, it contains the names of Gandavimuktha Saidhanthika, Gouthama and Adideva.
