Corrections and clarifications

  • Sharp-eyed readers spotted the error in an item in “Snapshots” (August 28, 2008, page 1) — titled “Miniature version of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’”. The text said “Hamlet” as well. But the AFP photograph showed a miniature version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. The unedited AFP photo caption was “Indian school teacher Ratilal Mancharam Mandali poses with his copy of Macbeth (The Scottish Play) by William Shakespeare and a match box in Ahmedabad on August 27, 2008. The book which is 5cm by 3cm by 1cm (length/width/height) consists of 315 pages. Mandali bought this tiny book from ‘Ravivari’ or ‘Sunday Market’ in the western Indian city for Indian Rupees 50 in 1975 (USD 5.97 at this time) not knowing of the potential wealth the pages held. He is in communication with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Britain who have reportedly offered him 2,00,000 Indian Rupees (USD 4,564) for the book, however bibliophile Mandali is unwilling to accept less than 1,000,000 Indian Rupees (USD 22,820) for the miniature work.” (Other details seen on the book are “Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Allied Newspapers Ltd., Gray’s Inn Road, London W.C.”)

  • A report on the English Premier League (“Manchester United gets off the mark”, “Sport”, August 27, 2008) had suggested erroneously that Manchester United (on four points after beating Portsmouth) had drawn level with Liverpool, Blackburn, Hull and Newcastle. Liverpool and Chelsea (six points each) are two points ahead of Manchester United.
