Panther skin seized, three arrested

VISAKHASPATNAM: Two government schoolteachers were among three persons arrested by the Forest Department for possessing skin of a panther near Makavarapalem, about 80 km from here, on Thursday.

Sources said the skin was found in the house of R. Srirama Murthy at Bayyavaram village.

Later, his colleague Shaikh Rasool and accomplice V. Satyanarayana were arrested. Another perosn accused of involvement in trading tiger skins Muralikrishna is absconding.

Sources said the accused persons were allegedly involved in getting tiger skins from interior areas on Andhra-Orissa border due to lack of presence police and forest officials in the area. These areas are also considered Maoist stronghold. A case has been booked under Wildlife Conservation Act and enquiry is on.
