Bangalore
Bangalore: The southwest monsoon’s arrival a few months ago might have been somewhat anti-climactic. But July and August have more than made up for its initial truancy. The nearly 300 mm of rain recorded in the city this August has set a 10-year record, according to A. Muthuchami, Director of the meteorological centre. “The last time Bangalore received so much rain in August was in 1998 when we recorded 370 mm,” he said. As for July’s rainfall, the city received 276 mm, which set a 60-year record, he added. The last time we recorded so much rain in July was in 1949. Not surprisingly, the entire season’s rainfall (January to August) has been twice the normal value, according to Mr. Muthuchami. The scalding, sunny mornings and the thundershowers in the evening that Bangalore has been experiencing for three days now are typical of the “break monsoon,” when the monsoon weakens over the coast and strengthens over the interior parts of Karnataka, he said. And curiously, the heavy rain does not appear to have done much to ease the rising temperature. Bangalore recorded a fairly considerable 29 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
