TIRUCHI: To tap the human resource potential of the two per cent of population with various disabilities in the country, accounting for over two crore people in real terms, the model of training and placement adopted at the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), Bharathidasan University, promises to be a harbinger. Having placed about 100 disabled candidates after imparting free training on basic computer and specialised diploma in Desktop Publishing for deaf and dumb candidates, and in playing key board and guitar instruments for visually disabled youths, for over two years now, the IECD is looking forward to establishing a centre for developing and testing software meant for training purposes. The prototype of the software perfected through experimental testing of training programmes, including the ones on DTP and Animation, at the proposed centre could be adopted elsewhere in the country, according to the Institute Director K. Parthasarathy. Focus on dropoutsThis is the way the disabled, who mainly constitute school dropouts, could be mainstreamed into economic progress of the country, said Prof. Parthasarathy, pointing out that the training will help the candidates to undertake job works online from the comfort of home. In fact, despite the low qualification, the disabled youth rank high in terms of creativity, Prof. Parthasarathy said, citing the instance of two of the trained candidates taking progressive steps towards entrepreneurship. He sounded certain that with the encouragement of funding agencies like University Grants Commission and the Department of Science and Technology for the initiative of Bharathidasan University to establish such a software centre, the model of training and placement for the disabled adopted by the IECD would have higher visibility prompting several other higher educational institutions across the country to follow suit.
