84 children found to be HIV positive
Correspondent
VIZIANAGARAM: Bala Sahayog project has so far identified 1257 HIV families out of the targeted 2000 in the 10 mandals in Vizianagaram Revenue division. The project has diagnosed 84 children below 18 years of age as HIV positive, and found that 114 children have not been attending school due to the stigma attached to HIV, according to Nature project director S. Bala Raju. Interacting with field staff, Mr. Bala Raju said that the project, launched in coordination with National and State AIDS Control Societies and Family Health Consortium, was aimed at providing medical assistance, counselling and rehabilitation. He said 30 blood samples out of 96 collected from the identified families were diagnosed HIV positive. He appealed to voluntary organisations, elected representatives, media and youth to create awareness among general public and remove apprehensions, if any, against HIV patients. An awareness camp would be conducted next month, Additional DM&HO S. Chndra Reddy said.
