Focus on women, child health
Staff Reporter
MACHILIPATNAM: Stressing the need for a close coordination among the officials of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme and Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP) to ensure complete health to women and children, Krishna district Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer on Friday said that the mother mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) could be reduced only if special care was taken of their health.
Addressing a day-long workshop with the officials of the ICDS, IKP and Medical and Health Department, Ms. Ramaiyer said that lack of pre-natal and post-natal care was one of the reasons for increase in MMR and IMR. Asserting that top priority would be given to the health of mother as well as child, she said nutritious food would be supplied to women and children in rural areas through anganwadi workers, health volunteers and members of Grama Samakhyas. She asked the officials to conduct meetings with mothers and health camps for women and children frequently.
“Besides supplying nutritious food, we have to conduct awareness programmes in villages to make women understand the importance of nutrients,” she said. Ms. Ramaiyer said basic infrastructure should be supplied to the primary health centres and the health camps must be conducted in all villages from next month.
