Held for running teacher training institute without permission

TAMBARAM: Personnel of the Central Crime Branch of the Mount Police Commissionerate have arrested a 47-year-old man on charges of running a teacher training institute without permits from the Central and State governments and also for allegedly cheating students to the tune of Rs. 86 lakh.

Police said K. Titus was running the institute at Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district and had admitted two batches of students since 2004. However, the institute was yet to receive the formal approval from the National Council for Teacher Education and the State government’s Directorate of Teacher Education and Research. The second batch of 39 students, all women, was unable to appear for the final examinatons in 2007.

When the students demanded the refund of the Rs.1 lakh-fee, Titus repotertedly refused. A section of the students submitted a petition to Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R. Jangid during a daily meeting on Thursday.

It was forwarded to CCB officials, who managed to arrested Titus from a relative’s house in Pozhichalur. Police said investigations were on to recover the money he had collected from the students.

Jewellery stolen

Gold jewellery weighing nearly 10 sovereigns were stolen from a house in Chromepet New Colony, 16th Street. Police said Subramanian, working with a company in Tambaram, had locked his house and left for night shift on Thursday. When he returned on Friday morning, he noticed the door and the almirahs broken open and the jewellery missing.
