Traditional chic: Women who participated in the catwalk wearing ‘pattu saree’ in Berhampur on Saturday. — BERHAMPUR: It was a catwalk with a difference, as women dazzled on the ramp wearing pattu sarees with aplomb during a special competition held in the city on Friday evening. This unique competition was organised by the women’s wing of the Arya Vaishya Sangha. Traditional wearThis competition was organised to coincide with the Sravan Friday, which is auspicious for worshipping goddess Laxmi by the women. Pattu sarees are always related to traditional rituals in Hindu tradition. The organisers had therefore organised a competition where the participants were to show up how pattu sarees can magnify their beauty. It was also a homage to the traditional ‘pattu weavers’ of Berhampur who have made the city famous as ‘silk city’. Most participants also wore Berhampuri pattu. The judges gave marks as per the choice of saree, its wearing skills and the adeptness to do different works including rituals of Laxmi Puja while wearing the traditional pattu sarees. There was no single winner in this competition as a group of women including A. Kavya, Ch. Aruna, Ch. Susama, A. Aparna, S.Janaki were declared joint winners. Kavya said such competitions would keep alive the tradition of saree wearing especially pattu sarees among the new generation who are more attracted towards western dresses.
