Free dhotis and saris to be distributed soon

NAMAKKAL: The production of dhotis and saris for the ‘Free Dhoti and Sari’ scheme of the State Government is likely to be completed by November, said Minister for Backward Classes, Handlooms and Textiles K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran. He was participating in a review meeting in Tiruchengode on Friday. The minister said that the Government had planned to distribute 1.58 crore dhotis and 1.59 crore saris to the poor families under the scheme this year. A sum of Rs. 256 crore was earmarked for the implementation of the scheme. The production will be completed by November and the cloths will be handed over to the revenue department within December 15. All the eligible persons in the State will be given free dhotis and saris, he said.
The Tiruchengode Co-operative Marketing Society will produce 35 lakh saris and 31 lakh dhotis for the scheme.
In Namakkal district, a total of 4583 looms were being used for producing saris and 3383 looms for dhotis, the minister added. Earlier, the minister inspected the co-operative societies and checked the quality of dhotis and saris produced for the scheme.
