BERHAMPUR: A rally was organized in the city on Saturday to popularise eye donation. According to sources Berhampur holds the distinction of being the city from where highest number eye donations has occurred. This rally was organized jointly by the Friends Welfare Club and the Ganajm district blindness control society. It may be noted that more than 33 eye donations have already occurred in the city. Two social organisations of the city Friends Welfare Club and the Friends Helping Club have played a major role in motivating family members of deceased persons of the city to donate the corneas before cremation. Experts from the Opthalmology department of the MKCG medical college hospital, J. P Behera, Nageswar Rao Subudhi, eye specialist of city hospital, and S.K.Patnaik, Chief District Medical Officer, attended this rally. Secretary of the Friends Welfare Club, N.V.Srinivas and its president, Ch. Durgaparasad said they would launch a door-to-door campaign in the city and its suburbs soon to gather pledges for eye donation. They said through this rally and other consciousness-building efforts they wanted to reduce the anxieties in the minds of relatives of the deceased regarding eye donation operation.
