Kakinada: The A.P Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation was giving training to physically challenged persons in different vocations to enable them to lead independent lives. It was also trying to infuse confidence that they were not inferior to any normal person as all of them were endowed with one talent or the other, said the corporation’s Managing Director S. Amruthaiah.

Participating as a guest of honour at the valedictory function of training for physically challenged women in Italian lace making at Maharshi Bulusu Samba Murthy Institute of Social Development here on Saturday, Mr. Amruthaiah said the State Government has enhanced the budget for welfare of physically challenged and efforts were being made to alleviate their plight by providing necessary support for the setting up self-employment units.

Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said the physically challenged persons would get increased pensions from October on the basis of the percentages of their disability. The Vikalangula Corporation was distributing calipers, tricycles and other helping aids to the needy besides extending them financial and logistical support. The coordinator of Abhayam Foundation, which initiated the training session, Pyda Venkateswara Rao said 37 physically challenged women were imparted skills in making laces and expressed confidence that they would make a decent living on their own and hopefully show the path to others.

Stitching Liliane Fonds of the Netherlands, NGO Spoorthi were the co-sponsors and supporters of the programme.

Assistant Director of Disabled Welfare K. Jeevan Babu, T. Srinivasa Rao of Maharshi Bulusu Samba Murthy institute and Lawrence Rao of Spoorthi were among those present.
