Call for meeting of MLCs, Minister told

Staff Correspondent

Solutions sought to problems in education

New transfer policy termed anti-teacher

Remedial teaching: discussion on pros and

cons sought

Chitradurga: Y.A. Narayanswamy, MLC, has urged Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwara Hedge Kageri to convene a meeting of all MLCs to discuss problems in the education sector.

Speaking at the “Guru Spandana” programme organised by the Department of Public Instruction here on Saturday, he said that for long MLCs had been demanding that the Minister hold a meeting as they had several problems to be solved.

“We will take a delegation to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa if the Minister does not call for a meeting immediately,” he said.

In reply to the demand by some teachers for the withdrawal of the Government Order on remedial teaching, Mr. Narayanswamy, justifying the order, said it would help improve the quality of education. The MLC, however, suggested that a detailed discussion be held about the pros and cons of the order as many educationists had opposed it.

‘Scrap policy’

Terming the new transfer policy drafted by the Education Department anti-teacher, he demanded that the Government immediately scrap it.

“Several issues have not been considered while drafting the policy,” he said. He welcomed the Government’s decision to transfer all non-teaching staff who had worked in one place for over five years.

He instructed the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and Block Education Officers to keep a watch on clerical and other non-teaching staff to ensure that they discharged their duties properly.

On the allegation that teachers in unaided schools were being paid poorly, Mr. Narayanswamy urged DDPI L. Rangappa to ensure that teachers were paid according to the minimum pay scale stipulated by the Government.

He expressed happiness over the district achieving the second position in the State in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination.
