Belgaum
Belgaum: The proposal to hike water tariff for those getting 24x7 supply under the Karnataka Urban Water Sector Improvement Project is expected to come up for consideration in the next council meeting of Belgaum City Corporation (BCC). Official sources in the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board said here on Saturday that the Government had directed the local municipalities to fix fresh tariff for drinking water wherever the 24/7 project had been implemented.
The project had been operationalised in 10 BCC wards that come under Belgaum (South) and Belgaum (North) zones, and in demonstration zones in Gulbarga, Hubli and Dharwad, from April 3. As against the prevailing fixed rate of Rs. 1,000 a year (Rs. 83 a month), the consumers may have to pay nearly 42 per cent more if the tariff is hiked.
Sources said that the Government had proposed to increase tariff from the present Rs. 83 a month for usage up to 15,000 litres, to Rs. 118 a month. According to the proposed hike, there will be a minimum payable amount of Rs. 48 a month and Rs. 6 for every 1,000 litres for usage up to 8,000 litres. For usage between 8,001 litres and 15,000 litres, and between 15,001 litres and 25,000 litres, the rate per 1,000 litres will be Rs. 10 and Rs. 15 respectively. Until now, the water tariff for every 1,000 litres was Rs. 5.60 and the minimum monthly rate Rs. 83 for usage up to 15,000 litres. According to the new proposal, though the minimum payable amount has been reduced to Rs. 48, the slab has been cut to 8,000 litres.
