Social bodies call for harmony

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Social organisations and intellectual forums called for communal harmony and stringent action against riot mongers.

Several members of the Global Council of Indian Christians sat on a dharna appealing for intervention to prevent further loss of life and property. “We appeal to all of you to do everything possible to protect the life and property of Christians and other people who are victims of this communal violence,” GCIC president Sajan K. George said here.

Mr. George demanded urgent compensation to the kin of the dead and the injured.

The Republican Party of India (RPI) too staged demonstration on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. Most of the victims in Kandhamal district belonged to Scheduled Caste and Tribe, RPI State president Seikh Abdul Wali said.

Civil society groups too came out denouncing State Government over the violence. Activists, who gathered under the banner of INSAF, a New Delhi-based voluntary organisation, demanded that the State Government stop the “Asthi Kalas Jatra” of Swamiji as announced Mr. Togadia.

Meanwhile, several victims hit by violence in Kandhamal district reached the capital city to take shelter.

They were residing in YMCA building where they described how they had fled the district covering miles of distance through jungle routes.
