Standing crops in 7,260 acres damaged Kharif sowing picks up in district Bellary: Following heavy rains and floods during the month, standing crops in 7,260 acres of land have been damaged. The crop loss has been estimated at Rs. 4.52 crore. According to a survey conducted by the Agricultural Department, paddy, maize, sunflower, sugarcane, banana, bajra and cotton are among the crops damaged in 69 villages of Hadagali, Hospet, Sirguppa and Bellary taluks. During the first fortnight of August, the Tungabhadra was in spate due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas in Shimoga district. As a result, 3,646 acres of land in 19 villages in Hadagali taluk were inundated. Due to heavy discharge from the Tungabhadra reservoir, 267 acres and 734 acres of land in Hospet and Sirguppa taluks respectively, which are in the downstream of the dam, were flooded causing crop loss, B.Y. Srinivas, Joint Director of Agriculture, told The Hindu. Flash floods in some of the nallahs, joining Hagari river, in Bellary taluk this week caused damage to standing crop in 2,612 acres, Mr. Srinivas said. Meanwhile, sowing for the kharif season picked up due to good rainfall and release of water into the canals from the Tungabhadra reservoir. Sowing was completed in 3.25 lakh hectares (1.77 lakh ha rainfed and 1.47 lakh ha irrigated) as against the target of 3.94 lakh ha.
