The size of the tehbazari site would be six feet by four feet

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi started implementation of National Policy on Urban Vendors with beginning of allocation of tehbazari sites to squatters, vendors and urban poor at a function organised in MCD’s West Zone on Friday.

In the first phase about 10,000 applicants would be accommodated by the civic body in the additionally identified sites. The size of the tehbazari site would be six feet by four feet and to provide an aesthetic appearance, stalls of uniform design would be provided by the civic body. The permissible items of trading would be non-prohibited articles and cooking of food would not be permitted at these sites.

According to the civic body, the Supreme Court of India in its order dated February 6, 2007 and May 17, 2007 had approved the scheme of MCD for squatters, vendors, weekly bazaar holders and applications for the same had been invited from them between August 16 and November 15 last year. The Corporation spokesperson Deep Mathur said: “The MCD had received 1,31,807 applications and these were scrutinised by Ward Vending Committees and Zonal Vending Committees formed in all the 12 zones. Additional squatting and vending sites were also identified by these Committees and the process of allotment of these sites was started on the guidelines provided by the Supreme Court.”

“The decision on number of applicants to be accommodated in the next phase would be taken by these Committees depending upon the availability of space and the eligibility of the vendors and squatters,” he added.
