China to host meet on open universities

MADURAI: The 22nd annual conference of Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) will be held at Tianjin in China from October 14 with participation of heads of universities from different countries.

A communication about the conference theme and the focus of deliberations was sent by the organisers to various universities, including the Madurai Kamaraj University. The theme of this three-day meet is: “New Trend, New Developments and New Missions of Open and Distance Education in Asia and the World.”

MKU Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel, who is attending the China conference told The Hindu that he is keen to learn the practises of best universities in the world and adopt/adapt them to suit the local requirements. “Our university has a strong Directorate for distance education with total student strength of over 1.25 lakh students. We want to take more steps to sustain the success,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

The list of keynote speakers at the conference includes Sir John Daniel, president and CEO, Commonwealth of Learning, who speaks on Distance Education across Borders.

Other topics coming up are Lifelong Education and Adult Learning, Missions of Open University, Open and Distance Education Resource Sharing, New trends/challenges in the use of internet in Asian distance education.

Over 200 authors from 15 countries are submitting their paper abstracts at the meet to be held from October 14 to 16.
