Army plans legal action against quarrying

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Army is preparing to initiate legal action to check stone quarrying in the area neighbouring the Mukkunnimala firing range and training ground near Nemom.

An official press note quoting a Defence spokesman said the ongoing quarrying in the vicinity of the training area was posing a threat to the army’s activities. “The hillock in the range area acts as a wall which stops the bullets from flying around, thereby rendering safety to the surrounding areas. The rampant quarrying of stones may lead to collapse of the wall. This may not only sound the death knell for the only training area available to the Army in Kerala but will also lead to an ecological disaster for the region,” it said.

The spokesman said local people had also encroached into the firing range and training ground and built structures within the government-acquired defence land. The land, he noted, is classified as A-1 Defence land.
