Agricultural university advises sunflower farmers to sell seeds immediately

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: As there is no scope for increase in prices for sunflower seeds in the coming months, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised sunflower farmers to sell seeds immediately.

According to a release from the university, the econometric analysis confirmed that the price of sunflower seeds will cost between Rs. 24 and Rs. 26 a kg from September to December. The team consisting of N. Raveendaran, project co-ordinator, D. Sri Akila and P. Padmavathy, from the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of the university found that due to price rise that prevailed in the previous years, farmers had undertaken cultivating more sunflower this season.

The price of palm oil and soy oil is found to be declining. The reduction of import duty of crude sunflower oil by the Government of India has impacted the price of all edible oils in the domestic markets.

Palm oil which used to cost Rs. 57 a kg now costs Rs. 48 a kg. Crude sunflower oil that was Rs. 1,020 a tin (15 kg) is now Rs. 840 a tin.

The refined sunflower oil price has also come down, the university said.
