KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is trying to change the independent foreign policy pursued by Prime Ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru to Rajiv Gandhi. Inaugurating the State conference of the Kerala Public Service Commission Employees’ Union (KPSCEU) here on Saturday, the Minister said that the Manmohan Singh government’s attempt was to make India an ally of the United States in its bid to enforce global hegemony. He said that capitalist political and developmental policies followed by the UPA government were responsible for the complex political scenario in the country. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was pursuing its communal agenda, the Congress was following a pro-U.S. line, he said, adding that both were harmful to the interests of the country. Mr. Balakrishnan said that the general strike on August 20 was called as a last resort of trade unions against the policies of the UPA government. The agitation would be intensified if the government did not reverse its policies, he added. He said that religious minorities were facing difficulties in States ruled by the BJP, while they were safe in the States ruled by the Left parties. The Minister said that after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government came to power, recruitment proceedings through the Public Service Commission could be strengthened. Staff recruitment in more sectors could be brought under the PSC, he said. Union State president C.V. Sarasamma presided. CPI(M) leader K.P. Sahadevan was also present.
