HERO’S WELCOME: Senior India volleyball coach G.E. Sridharan, a recipient of the Dronacharya Award, gets a warm welcome on his arrival at the Coimbatore Airport on Saturday. —

Coimbatore: “I have had several happy moments in my life but this one certainly was the best,” said an emotionally choked G.E. Sridharan, senior India volleyball coach, on his arrival here after receiving the Dronacharya Award in Delhi on Friday.

“When President Prathiba Patil presented me with the award my joy knew no bounds. At the same time, I was a tensed a bit because I could not believe myself being there.

To enjoy that golden moment, I stood in silence and relaxed for a few seconds before receiving it,” said the 54-year-old, who guided the under-19 team to the silver in the World championship in 2003.

‘My big dream’

Sridharan, the first coach from Tamil Nadu to receive this rare honour, leave alone volleyball, promises to give something back to his State and country.

“I have been longing for this award because I gave my all for the game and for my country for the past 17 years. But just when I was beginning to feel that it was slipping out of my hands came the glad news. Now that the Government has recognised my hard work, I will continue to strive hard for better results.”

“My big dream, like the Dronacharya, is also to see my boys figure in the 2012 Olympics. It is not a difficult task at all. Lots of exposure and sweat will make it possible,” he added.

An Arjuna Awardee as well, Sridharan, on Saturday, was accorded with a rousing reception at the Coimbatore airport by his family, friends and well-wishers from the Coimbatore District Volleyball Association and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. It was roses all the way for the Indian coach as he emerged out of the airport to the tunes of the police band and thundering claps and cheers from the large crowd.

“I expected my family and a few of my friends here but I am touched by this reception. I thank each one of you personally,” said a beaming Sridharan as he gently kissed his proud mother and the bronze statuette.
