VISAKHAPATNAM: The banned CPI (Maoist) declared that it would not obstruct the movement of APSRTC buses and other public transport to the remote villages of the Visakha Agency area and also would not come in the way of providing medical help. Official spokesman of East Division of the CPI (Maoist) Ganesh in a press release said it was the responsibility of the administration and the ruling Congress party to ensure that the weekly shandies, which are not being held due to threats from the police, were held regularly, transport was available uninterruptedly and business was conducted normally. The Congress leaders would pay a heavy price if normalcy was not restored in these aspects, the party warned. The press release took exception to the AP TRANSCO’s statement in the past that it could not take up electrification in the interior areas and the Maoist party was responsible for the interior villages remaining in the dark. At the same time he said that the power projects in the Visakha Agency area had resulted in the displacement of a large number of Girijans who were not paid proper compensation and also power supply was not provided to the villages around the projects. Suppression in villagesThe Maoist party said the Girijans were being subjected to severe repression by the police to ensure that the bauxite mining could be taken up unhindered. Arrests, surrenders, counselling and combings had increased and no Girijan could move around freely unless he or she could answer satisfactorily many questions posed to them by the police. Some villages in G. Madugula, Chintapalli and G.K. Veedhi mandals were experiencing curfew like situation for the last one month. Terrorising the Girijans, obstructing their vehicles, arresting the traders illegally and forcing shandies not to take place were part of the methods adopted by the police in the Visakha Agency area, the press release said. Mr. Ganesh said that it was not true that the Maoist party was attacking every trader but was punishing only those who were fleecing the innocent Girijans. The incident of People’s Liberation Guerrilla destroying vans and jeeps at Maddigaruvu some time ago was one example.
