“Notify senior citizens Act”

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar has appealed to all Chief Ministers to notify the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 before the International Day of Older Persons celebrated on October 1.

Parliament enacted the law in December 2007 but only seven States — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Nagaland, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Assam and Tripura — have notified it. The Act makes it mandatory for children to take care of their parents and grandparents in their old age.
