Cathedral to receive facelift

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The landmark building housing the St. Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral at Palayam here is all set to receive a facelift.

The renovation of the 135-year-old structure is expected to begin on August 31, Sunday after the morning Holy Mass. The cathedral, which began as a place of worship for British soldiers and local people, later evolved into a church and a cathedral. The renovation project involves repair of the damaged sections of the building and providing more facilities for the devotees. The work has been awarded to a Mangalore-based firm. Apart from the diocese council and the finance committee, a 12-member expert committee including four engineers has been constituted to supervise the work.

According to Vicar Father C. Joseph, the auditorium behind the main building has been equipped to conduct rituals during the renovation period.
