LDF using political rhetoric to help land mafia: Chennithala

Congress workers picket government offices in the district

Protest: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and Congress leaders participating in a picketing organised by the party in the city on Saturday.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) of helping the land mafia by creating a smokescreen using political rhetoric.

Speaking after inaugurating a State-wide campaign against the increase in power tariff and bus fares here on Saturday, he said the empty rhetoric by the Left leadership was aimed at diverting public attention from burning problems such as the price hike.

Mr. Chennithala said the price hike and the increase in power tariff had dealt a severe blow for the common man in Kerala. The government, he alleged, is trying to help the real estate mafia instead of improving the lot of the general public.

Against hartal

“The LDF is guilty of using the weapon of hartal to stunt the development of Kerala, even as it opposes the Central government that had liberally sanctioned development projects and welfare schemes for the State,” he said.

Mr. Chennithala urged the State government to step down if it failed to address the problems of the people.

Congress workers picketed the Kerala State Electricity Board major section office at Manacaud as part of the campaign.

District Congress Committee (DCC) president V.S. Sivakumar presided over the meeting.

KPCC vice-presidents Mullapally Ramachandran and Thalekkunnil Basheer and DCC leaders were present.

The party leaders and workers courted arrest. They were taken to the Poonthura police station and later released.

KPCC vice-president N. Peethambara Kurup inaugurated the picketing at Attingal. KPCC secretary Solomon Alex inaugurated the agitation in Neyyattinkara town. The picketing at Kudappanakunnu was inaugurated by K. Mohankumar.

Party workers picketed offices at Karakulam, Azhoor, Vellanad, Varkala, Balaramapuram, Sreekaryam, Kanjiramkulam, Pappanamcode and other places.

Mr. Sivakumar said 106 government offices all over the district were picketed.
